Navigating Spirituality with Discernment (Like a Badass)

Hey there, fellow spiritual being!

Looks like you’re in a middle of an existential crisis. Why else would you click on this blog post?

Jk.

It’s just the mercury and mars retrograde. Don’t worry. 🤪

Jokes aside, using spiritual discernment is something I wish I knew in the beginning of my journey. Diving headfirst into your practice without warning can get overwhelming.

Now that modern spirituality is louder and more widespread than ever, you can imagine the saturation (and chaos) in information and teachings.

While there are advantages like more people becoming open to the unseen wonders of the universe and a divine being (or beings, whatever you believe in), there are disadvantages too, like scams and fear mongering.

So, what helps to counteract those cons? Developing spiritual discernment.

“How?”, you ask.

The answer can be as simple as having a strong sense of self.

However, much like other concepts and desires in life, building and maintaining that rock solid foundation within self isn’t as easy as it sounds.

Ya gotta do the healing, ya gotta do the shadow work, ya gotta rewrite your narrative, ya gotta claim your universal magic! Probably not in one fell swoop, but you get my drift.

Story time: I, at one point, felt unwelcome in the spiritual community. There are some (notice how I say “some”, not “all”) gurus and experts out there that can be restrictive in their teachings.

The best way I can explain this is through the whole concept of “love and light”.

Yes, getting in touch with your higher self and the intricate, divine connections of the universe inspires you to exude pure love and light to others. But let’s be real, we’re human. And humans are messy! We’re imperfect af, y’all.

You simply cannot be love and light 24/7. It’s not possible. Otherwise, it’ll drive you completely insane.

Each day in this wild journey, we do what we can to be our highest, most divine, and most compassionate self.

Here’s the catch though. You can’t fully expand that side of yourself if you don’t acknowledge and embrace the dark or shadow within you.

A fellow Cosmic Boss and good friend of mine, Devon, also breaks it down with much enlightenment and empowerment.

To be exclusively all love and light is not the fucking point of spirituality. The point is to connect to the power we have had within ourselves all along–whether it was suppressed by excruciating trauma or dictative societal norms, or a combination of many other external factors–in order to connect to a higher realm and state of being.

If there are some spiritual practices and teachings out there that don’t resonate with you, don’t force yourself to do them or believe in them. Spiritual discernment 101.

That’s the beauty of spirituality – it’s unique to you.

My spirituality, for example, is all about my own definition of radical self-love, which then reverberates and contributes to the greater good of the universe. Because at the end of the day, I truly believe it has to start with you.

“Be the change you wish to see the change in the world,” as someone once said. It, for sure, wasn’t Mahatma Gandhi. He said something alluding to the famous quote, but those weren’t his exact words. Trust me, I did my research.

Anyway, on the other side of the spectrum of spiritual discernment, there are people saying what you want to hear to eventually exploit you, especially when you’re outrightly vulnerable.

Cults, anyone? Yup, we know they exist up until this day.

The solution to this particular conundrum is pretty similar to the first one. Run at the first indication of a red flag. It’s easier to tell since cults exert way more force, shame, and violence (gaslighting to the next level) into most of what they do.

Obviously, it can be challenging when in a more vulnerable state. If all else fails, trust your gut. It will never lead you astray. If it does–which, again, rarely happens–and this will be a very hot take: you were most likely supposed to learn a lesson for the journey ahead.

Speaking of hot takes, here’s another one. There’s discernment needed when interacting with your spirit guides. This is a matter that not a lot of people talk about.

They usually discuss exchanges with other spiritual entities. Like guests you may have invited over once but decided to prolong their stay because you forgot to tell them where to proceed for their exit.

While that’s relevant, it’s a topic I’d rather not get into because I don’t fuck with Ouija boards. Either practice utmost caution or never freaking touch the thing at all.

Now that we got that out of the way, let me tell you about using spiritual discernment with your spirit team. Having a league of powerful spiritual guides with and behind you is beautiful, there’s no doubt about that.

However, it’s important to stay vigilant with who you call on when you call on them. For example, when we’re in a lower vibration, we are more likely to attract negative energies. That includes spiritual entities.

If you call on a specific spirit guide, good. We don’t want to start asking for help aimlessly into the void. But you have to make sure that they’re the right spirit guide.

Stay with me.

There is a high probability for a low vibration spiritual entity to pose as one of your spirit guide members, especially if said spirit guide member is popular like the archangels.

Enter: discernment.

Bear in mind that spirit guides and divine beings will always speak with you from a place of unconditional love. The minute they feel hostile or cold, it’s most likely a false projection of them.

Don’t panic. Protect yourself by thanking the spiritual entity for their participation and telling them that they may now leave your space.

And before anyone starts protesting or going completely bonkers, no. I’m not here to instill fear. I’m here to create awareness about various scenarios that require spiritual discernment.

As for your actual spirit guides, yes, they are there to help. They naturally do that with your consent. So, know that there may come a point where you do have to draw boundaries. After all, you don’t want to become too dependent on their assistance.

Spiritual sovereignty, henny. Gotta have that balance between helping yourself and receiving help from your spirit team. Welcome to the cuckoo complicated yet beautiful human experience!

If you’re still here reading this, high-five. You’re a real one and I love you.

All said and done, it doesn’t matter whether you’re spiritual or religious. Discernment is an ability that is needed for the sake of your sanity. For an enlightening existence, for an empowering wellbeing.

And that’s on fucking badass period.
